We have just had a massive event that required 30+ parents for the event to go ahead for a 2 hour event. We’ve also had two school discos that required 12 parents at each school disco to give up a Friday night.
Why did these parents – who also work full-time and have families of their own – sacrifice their time to volunteer? Here’s some reasons why you should consider joining FABS and becoming a parent volunteer.
5. You can’t always give money but you can give time and it feels good to do so when you can
Any activity or product has a cost to put on – whether it’s time invested by people or by money from your wallet. The volunteers at the Summer Fete didn’t pay admission for wristbands because they paid in time. But you also get the benefit of knowing that you helped others, and that’s a priceless experience of soul- satisfaction.
4. You want to be a good friend and make friends for life
Parenting is tough! We’re all in this together at Burleigh School and having friendly faces and developing relationships with other parents can make this journey in life so much more enjoyable. Friendship is about having the laughs and good times dancing on the gym floor and enjoying play dates with the kids but its also about having a smile on the morning school walks, and having people you can depend on to help you when life hits a rough patch.
3. You want to pay it forward and honor those people who have helped you
There’s nothing like having kids that makes you remember your own childhood and think of your own parents. Maybe you want to heal some childhood memories – maybe you want to follow in the footsteps of your own parents – maybe you have had someone in your life that had a positive impact on your life’s direction. Kindness brings kindness. These FABS events help to make the school and community better for our hundreds of children and for many many years to come.
2. You want to inspire your child and show them what you can do
Show off our leadership skills and sense of civic duty to inspire your own children. For better or for worse, our children mimic and copy the behaviors they see us do – make it for the better. Your kids may not understand what you do in your career or job every day but they can understand when they see you help around the school and at their school events.
1. You want your child to have a bright future. Children are supposed to do better than their parents.
Let’s face it – we do it for our kids. It’s not rocket science – research shows that engaged parents contribute to improved academic performance, better behavior and better over well-being in our children. Volunteering isn’t about you – it’s about being a better version of yourself for them. It’s about making memories and having the future be a bit brighter for them.
Practicing grace
We’re all in different seasons and places in life. Maybe you’ve got a newborn or taking care of your parent that’s a priority. Maybe you’ve got a new job/ tough time at work and that’s taking up your attention. These 8 years your child will be at Burleigh School will come and go. We should all allow for grace. Life is a ride – we can’t all give our time all the time – but when you can, if you could consider joining FABS the benefits far outweigh the costs.
